Hand-forged Herb Chopper

Chopping fresh herbs: it’s the best part of making a salad. Learn how to make your very own herb-chopper in this one-day course which will focus on the forging of blades. Students will forge, heat treat and linish their own herb-chopping knife, and will leave with techniques to forge ahead with creative blade-forming projects of their own.

During this course, students will gain insight into working with carbon steels and the considerations required to forge and heat-treat these steel blades.

The day begins with an introduction to the forging process – breaking down and drawing stock efficiently, and forming the handle and bevels. We then use a bench grinder to correct the bevels, before heat-treating the blades to ensure the steel becomes hard-wearing. In the afternoon, hand-finishing techniques are used to finalise the work.

Students will get a full toolbox of techniques which will aid anyone looking to begin blade-smithing.
